Won't spin or drain except in permanent press mode

I notice the washing machine will only work porperly in permanent press mode. In the other settings it will not spin and drain it completes the cycle and stops without spinning and the load of clothes sits in a tank of water.
What part will fix this problem

If it works on the permanent press cycle then it sound like a problem with the timer.
