Exclamation Won't drain or spin, intermittently
Brand: Magic Chef
Model Number: W20HN2
Age: More than 10 years

Recent problem. At end of cycle have found the drum full of water twice. 1st time reset timer to spin and worked great. Last time (about 1 week later) would not drain or spin. Lid switch and timer making usual noises. Did notice that adjusting the water level selector to lowest setting emptied all water, but would not spin. Started rinse cycle over then fell asleep -- five hours later emptied and spun fine after resetting timer. Wife cried, prayed, then washed two loads today without problem. But I anticipate recurrence. No funny smells, smoke, or noises. When it spins, it spins appropriately for the selected cycle. Agitates just fine. Never tried to turn drum as it would not even start to drain. I'd love a front loader (spare my well water), but too expensive for now. Any suggestions on where to start? Read/scanned through 300 threads, but couldn't find one that seemed to fit. Thanks - Ray

With the washer empty tip it back and remove the dust cap in the center of the transmission pulley, turn the transmission pulley counter clockwise in a quick motion.

Watch and see if the cam is engaging or if it is damaged.

Here is a link to your washer model W20HN2.

Sheila: Thank you for responding. I did as you instructed. The cam engaged readily once I removed the belt (Otherwise, I could not spin the pulley fast enough to engage the cam). The cam does not appear to be significantly worn. This procedure leads me to the following question: Is the motor supposed to be loose? One of the mounts slides along its groove quite easily. This made removing the belt very easy.
Thanks - Ray

Yes the motor is suppose to be able to move back and forth freely.

When the washer does not drain do you hear the motor running?

If it happen again instead of advancing the timer try jiggling the time knob to see if it a bad connection in the timer.

If that does not work try open and closing the lid to see if it is the switch that is not making contact.

Thanks again. No, I don't hear the motor run. When I reset the water level selector knob to its lowest setting the motor turned on and emptied the tub, shut off, but never spun. The lid switch clicks like always. The timer can be heard running even though there is nothing happening. I once found the program had ended, but the drum was full of water. Jiggled and turned and did all kinds of things to the timer knob without success the last time.

Can you think of anything that might need a couple of hours rest then work that might contribute to this problem?

It seems to be working fine now, but I expect trouble again. Not sure you'll help me figure this out so long as it is working correctly.

Thank you Sheila.

Ray

You are right it is hard to fix something that is working but let me know if it happens again.

Sheila: Maybe I should just let my wife do the laundry, but... This morning with the first load it failed to empty or spin after the wash cycle (Cotton/Linen). I turned the water selector switch to reset, the water turned on very briefly then the spin cycle started and ran normally (albeit for half the time because the timer continues to run during these hiccups). If it happens again, I'll just try jiggling the timer, but that seems to be working OK. The settings were -- Hot wash/Cold rinse, full water selector, and Cotton/Linen wash cycle.
Thanks
Ray

Sheila: After observing a couple of cycles I discovered the following. It will occasionally empty the tub but not spin (in Permanent Press cycle) and empty and spin well into the programmed cycle (Cotton/Linens) causing an abbreviated spin (both 1st & 2nd). Does this sound like something is wrong with the timer? Seems the programs are somehow not working properly. When I lift and close the lid I can hear the click from the switch and the timer turn on and off. Turning the water level selector switch to reset does not work consistently.

A new front loader is beginning to sound real good, but some of the threads I read about those aren't very encouraging.

Hope your weekend was nice.

This does sound like the timer has bad contacts.

You can visually inspect the time contacts by taking the timer out and removing the plastic cover.

Here is your timer.

I'll give that a try. Remove the timer and then its plastic cover. Check the contacts.
Thanks
