Default Won't agitate, will spin
Brand: Maytag
Model Number: LA506
Age: 5 - 10 years

I recently purchased an older house that had an older washing machine. After about 2 months of use we smelled the belts going the way of the Dodo. I ordered new belts and installed them this morning. The tension appears to be correct on both the drive and pump belts. However when I start any cycle the tub will fill and then it will make some unpleasant squealing noises and smell again. I quickly stopped the machine and tried the spin cycle which worked perfectly.

Is there a bad bearing I could replace? It seems from looking around this and other sites that most machines will agitate but not spin. Mine is apparently not aware of this fact. Thanks for any advice you can offer.

Remove the drive belt and turn the drive pulley counterclockwise.

If the pulley will not move the transmission is locked and will need to be serviced.

Check and make sure the motor carriage is moving freely.

Check the pump pulley to make sure it will turn both ways.

Here is a link to your washer model la506.
