My Whirlpool washer does not spin on wash or rinse on any cycle. After searching forums, I rocked the drum & rotated it 3 times & it made a grating sound, but finally spun out on rinse cycle. For quite awhile now it has occasionally made a loud squealing sound when agitating a heavy load but it quits after a minute or so. From the time it was new, it has made a loud clunk when engaging the spin cycle but worked fine. I replaced the spring that keeps in balance a few years ago.

It sounds like the clutch may be getting bad.
