Default Whirlpool - how to replace main seal?
Brand: Whirlpool
Model Number: lst8244
Age: More than 10 years

I have a top loader whirlpool washer

It was leaking so I removed the shell.
It's coming from underneath, in the center of the tub outwards so I"m guessing it's the main seal.

Do I need special tools? or do I just pull the agitator and tub up and off?
any advice would be greatly appreciated.

on a small load it did not leak on the rinse cycle but did on a large load. I'm guessing the added weight of water put more stress on the seal.

As a rule the tub seal doesn't leak, however the painted steel tub center post that, the agitator shaft comes up from the trans mission to the agitator. So this post after a while ( ten yrs. or so) a spot on this post rusts through in side the seal and leaks, even though the seal is still in good shape. Thete's every chance your washer is internally rusting out. to repair this, isn't as bad as building a house, but this job requires taking the washer down to it's bare bones. I use a doner washer for the part that is needed. You will have to locate a new part from parts select.
so strip the washer ,remove the agitator, spin basket. Then scrub the skum off the seal and look for rust where the seal touches the plastic tub, and where the seal touches the metal post .Thats the 2 places it'll leak. Also look for cracks in the plastic tub!!!! Sir bettyboop
