Default Weak Spin Cycle
Brand: Whirlpool
Model Number: GSX9885JQ0
Age: 5 - 10 years

Previously I have had replacement of the Transducer on Dec. 06, 2006. a few months after that service replacement the washer would not pump and it was a infants sock in the pump. Just last week the machine would not pump again. It was now one an adult crew sock lodged just before the pump. After removing the sock, the washer did a few loads fine. Then my wife says that the loads were coming out wet. The washer does spin and running an empty rinse cycle the water is pumped from the basin and the basin does spin just not fast enough I suppose. A help site states that "If the clothes are still wet, you may have a worn or loose belt (Maytag®), a worn clutch (GE®/Hotpoint®), or a worn motor pulley or tub bearing. Replace the applicable component.
Alternatively, there could be clothes caught between the inner and outer tubs."
I have removed the Basket from the Tub/Outer to check for any foreign object that may be impeding the spin. Nothing was found. The washer spins, but just not fast enough.

You probably have a weak clutch. Also possible dragging brake shoes. Will need to pull tranny out to verify.
Pull off motor and turn coupler clockwise on tranny till it starts to engage. Is it now hard to turn=dragging brake shoes.

Mine is a Direct Drive unit, I am going to replace the Clutch, or at least the insides of the clutch (brake ring and spring).

Default New Clutch, still no Fast Spin

After installing the new clutch I ran through the diagnostic tests and all seemed to work fine. Running a test load resulted in the same soaking wet clothes. Even with the new clutch, I am not getting a fast Spin. Whats next?

Well, with a weak spin I thought to follow the brake tubing advise that I found here:
A Quick and Easy Fix for Whirlpool Washer Brake Lockup

Basically lube the brake drum with high temperature silicone-based
grease.

Hope this is not related, but now I have no spin in any diagnostic test......

Maybe the Balance Switch?

Any help would be appreciated.

That "quick fix" is not that reliable! Go to my repair proceedure unter technical section, and grind down the brake shoes on a grinder.

Okay. Could the addition of the Silicone grease caused the unit now to not spin at all during the Spin test? I will try and run a test load later today to see if the unit spins. I read something about a un-balanced laod switch having to do with a unit with no spin. Can this be reset?

Only as a Tech Talk section on this site. I am not a service Tech and do not think that I have access to any information there.

Read this help on FitITnow (appianceguru) forum site.
"Brakes usually release or they don't. If you can get the unit in the no spin condition again (past entry states motor runs and sounds like it's spinning but it isn't) what you would want to do is pop the two clips on the main top and tilt the top back. Put the unit into spin and pull out the timer. If we are lucky and the unit is still running but not spinning, with the motor running in this position, reach into the tub and try to spin the basket. If it turns like a roulette wheel and glides slowly to a stop, your brake is released. This means your belt, motor, motor pulley and pivots have all done there job because the brake is released. This would not point directly to a bad transmission. Probably a worn gear with a broken tooth floating around in the oil. That is all it takes for it to do what you are describing. Most of these units carry a 5 year tranny warranty."

If I can spin by hand during the spin test is this a sign that the brakes are actually releasing?

One possibility is you could have something in the tub. With a plastic tub it is easy to see it Just stick a light in prin basket and look for some thing.
It is a good idea to pull motor and pump and turn the tranny coupler clockwise till the transmission engages. If it is now hard to turn you have dragging brake shoes.
