Default Washing Machine Problem - Won't drain or spin, and electrical burning smell.
Brand: Kenmore
Model Number: Series 70 - Model 110.20722990
Age: 5 - 10 years

This is a Kenmore direct drive, 3 speed, washing machine. At first the problem was the machine would drain but wouldn't spin. I took it apart and the motor coupler was cracked, so I replaced it. I put everything back together, tested it, and the pump doesn't work and it won't spin. Plus, I get strong electrical burning smell.

I tested the continuity of the lid switch and that seems fine. I can hear the timer pause and kick on, so that leads me to believe it's ok. I took the machine apart again, bypassed the lid switch, and turned it on. The motor isn't spinning at all and I still get the electrical burning smell.

I tried running some continuity checks on the motor and the capacitor, but I can't tell if I'm doing it right from the instructions I found online. I'm not really getting much of anything for resistance. I think the motor is shot, but I'm also worried about the capacitor.

Any experience or suggestions would be very helpful. I can't do anything until Monday because all the parts stores are closed.

Thanks!

Default

Take the pump off the end of the motor and try and see if the motor will run.

It sounds like there is something in the pump or the pump has seized.
