Washing machine fills up then does not go to wash cycle

My hotpoint WM52 fills up but does not progress onto the wash cycle instead i can hear a clicking noise, the dial moves round and then drains.
Any ideas???

Can you please supply your model number?

It should be on a tag with the serial number.
