Default Washing Machine Discharge Question
Brand: Hotpoint
Age: 1 - 4 years

My laundry room is located in the basement. The drain pipe for the washing machine located about 7 feet in the air, over top of the washing machine. (New house... not sure why it was built that way!) The discharge hose for the washing machine is only about 5 feet long and will not reach the drain pipe. I was told that washing machines are only designed to pump about 5 feet in the air. Am I going to have a problem discharging the water 7 feet in the air and where can I find a long enough discharge hose to reach that distance? Every store I checked only sells the discharge hose in 5 foot lengths. I tried connecting two discharge hoses together but the hose clamps crush the flimsy plastic ends of the discharge hose and it leaks. Any suggestions?

Thanks,

Christian

Get some 4 foot legs

Sorry could not resist. I should be ashamed of myself but for some reason this just seemed funny to me.

I would never try to pump to a 5 foot high drain never mind 7 feet
This will be very hard on your drain pump also the water in the drain hose will drain back into your washer, if it does not have a check valve
The norm is about about 3 feet off the floor for a washer drain

At what height is the ptrap for your drain pipe located
If it is a foot off the floor and then you have a 6 foot riser, just cut the pipe at the 3 foot off the floor height

Always leave at least one foot of riser above the ptrap, two feet is better but it depends on what height you end up with

Default Washing Machine Discharge

Other than adding 4 foot legs, any suggestions? I think the drain is up so high because it goes through the foundation and out to the street at that level. Not sure what else I can do. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Not sure how the previous owners had their machine hooked up.

I have never heard of anything close to this
Is this pipe connected to your main stack that goes up through the house and out the roof. If it is connected this way does it have a ptrap. If there is no trap, sewer gas can enter your house. Not a good thing.
I am having a very hard time visualizing this set up but something is very weird

Does it have a screw on cap, if it does it is a clean out not a washer drain

If there is no proper washer drain pipe but you are close to your sewer hole perhaps the old owners drained into this. They may even have had some ABS pipe put together to get from the washer to this drain

If you have a friend who is a plumber or has building experience invite them over for a drink

Sorry I could not be more helpful but you have got me stumped

Just had another thought
Most newer homes have a laundry hook up station
This is a white plastic box which is recessed into the wall
It has the two shut off valves for the washer
But many of them also have a hole (~2") in the bottom
It is quite easy to miss unless you are looking for it
This is the drain
