I have the same problem.

With no load (no clothes) the machine works fine on all cycles.

Add clothes it does all ok except spin and makes a burning smell once it gets to the spin cycle.

I have a GE WJSR2070B2WW.

Thanks!

I had this problem and it was my capacitor that was burning. I replaced it but now I still have the problem it will run normally if I move the belt and turn the motor a little. See my post today.

I did a little more testing and my washer works normally in other modes like "Delicate" & "Permanent Press". I am starting to suspect my timer. It only sits and cooks the capacitor in "Normal" mode.

You may want to try observing you machine more. Try taking off the lower front panel and see if you can watch the motor and belt operate as it runs through cycles. It may just be your belt is slipping????

Default Burning Smell

Sounds serious. I hope you are handy with tools. These machines are designed super simple. They are easy to take apart and to repair. You can get all the information you need to fix them on the internet. I got mine fixed for one $30 part.
