Default Washer won't spin or agitate
Brand: Maytag
Model Number: LA712
Age: More than 10 years

Top load Maytag LA712 Washer. Worked fine, suddenly stopped certain functions.

Will start and fill up. Switch is ok, belts are not worn but not real tight. Drains, motor runs. Pully's move under drum but drum will not move. No clothes stuck in drum. Shaft turns. It seems to maybe be from the pully's on up like it's not grabbing something to move the drum. Won't spin or agitate. Thats the problem. HELP.

Check to see if the motor is moving on its rollers freely.

The motor runs both ways one for agitate and the other for spin.

Remove the belt and turn the pulley by hand to see if the both function.

Here is a link to your washer model LA712.

Default washer won't spin or agitate. looking for tranny part

There was no movement from the pulley to the tub so I decided to go ahead and take apart the tranny and check it out. I do commercial swimming pool repair, so I know how to do a lot of repair. In the parts list for my model in this link Maytag LA712 Parts List in the tranny, on the shaft, there is a pinion/gear labled 2-10315. Mine is broken in half, so obviously this was what broke. On this diagram, it shows two different one's that look like that. My model only has one of these, but this diagram for my model shows two. I'm trying to figure out which one it is. Mine is plastic and has gear notches on the inside and outside. It sits right where that part is on the diagram. I'm trying to find the part number to order a new one somewhere. Anyone know where I can find this part? Thanks, Dave

One of the pinions goes on the agitator shaft and the other goes on the drive shaft.

The pinion for the drive shaft is part number 2-10315 which is PartSelect part number PS61731.

The pinion for the agitator shaft is part number 2-10054 which is PartSelect part number PS61715.

Thanks, this is exactly the part that was broken and in 3 pieces. Wouldn't agitate or spin. Pulley's moved but would't move the tub. I do pool repair so should be able to do this no problem. Any special tips while putting this tranny back together? Where do I put in the new lube oil when I do it?

When you put the oil in you put it in the base so you have to have the transmission in the upright position.

You should replace the shaft seals when you put it back together.
