Default Washer wont spin or agitate
Brand: Roper
Age: More than 10 years

Older Roper wont spin or agitate....upon inspecting I see "ground up" belt pieces underneath, how would a total novice repair man get in there and change belt?

You have the "economy" Whirlpool washer. Look at the partselect web site for take apart info. Remove pump, motor and check coupler to tranny, probably bad.

** When I flipped the machine over I saw rubber shavings under the washer from the belt area...any further thoughts?

Your washer does not have a belt.

The coupler joins the motor to the transmission.

To access the coupler you will have to remove the cabinet of the washer.

First take the two screws out of the console, this is the part that has the timer in it.

Flip the console up.

In the corners of the cabinet you will see two brasses looking clips.

Use a large flat blade screwdriver to remove these clips.

Unplug the wiring harness.

Tilt the cabinet toward you and lift up and the cabinet will come away from the washer.

Remove the two clips that hold the pump in place and swing the pump out of the way.

There are two motor mount, remove these and you now can replace the coupler.

Here is a link to your washer model RAL5144BW0.

The coupler is number 13 on the transmission breakdown.
