Default Washer Won't Spin
Brand: Kenmore
Model Number: 417.43042200
Age: 1 - 4 years

This front loader is suddenly leaving wet clothes after the wash cycle. When I turn the control dial to try to implement the spin cycle, the spin motor can be heard, but the basket doesn't spin around. Is this something I can trouble-shoot and perhaps fix on my own? I'm fairly handy and have replaced dryer belts in the past. If it's a job for a pro, what kind of time and parts expense is reasonable to tackle it?

Dan

Does the washer still go through the wash cycle.

The motor is used for both the wash and the spin.

You may be hearing the pump motor running.

Have you looked to see if the belt is still on.

Here is a link to the parts of your washer model 417.43042200.

It seems to go through wash cycles, and I don't know where to look for the
belt. Can you help?
Dan

If the tub is turning during the wash cycle then the belt is fine.

It is likely the motor controller that is faulty.

The motor controller is found in the back right corner.

We verified (through a $62 service call!) that it was a faulty motor controller. Is this something a DIYer could tackle?

We got the controller assembly and installed it, but it still doesn't work. When we had the back off and the new controller in we found that if we nudge the drum part belt is on we can get it started tumbling. Then it stops. Any suggestions?

I'm working with the washer in question and just installed the new motor controller and it still does not work on its own. With the water hoses removed but the unit plugged in and the back off, in various cycles I can prompt the motor/tumbler into going forward or backward by giving it a nudge in one direction or another and if it is in spin or wash cycle it will go that direction on its own for awhile, but when it is time for it to change directions, it will not do so until I give it a short spin to get it started again; even when I remove the belt -- and thus the tension -- from the motor spindle even it does not start or stop spinning on it's own, but will if I give it a little twist. And with the belt on and placed on final spin, if I give it a nudge to get it rotating, it never spins all that fast. and that's how we discoivered the probelm in the first place; our clothes came out wet from and weak final spin cycle, and then it stopped even tumbling in the wash cycle. Could it be the motor is weak/defective? I figure I tested the belt tension option by removing it and found the motor still did not spin without assistance from me. I did all this without the water hooked up; there's no reason water has to be in the washer to active the spin/wash cycles is there?

Thanks so much for any assistance you can lend! We've got kids and laundry is accumulating fast!

Is sound like there is a bad winding in the motor.

Well, we did a couple loads of laundry and it was working well. Then, after doing an average sized load of sheets, when we washed the next load it had stopped tumbling. It fills with water and then sits there, and then I think ultimately it spins and shuts down at end of cycle but there is no tumbling (and no washing of the clothes...)

What do you suppose happened? Is the controller probably bad as well as the motor having been bad? Please advise. Thanks.
