Actually I have no idea how old this washer is - it was given to me today. The washer agitates strongly, drains quite well but won't spin. It sounds like it tries to spin, after a bit there is a slight smell like a belt or something getting hot but it won't spin. Also the drum tampers are ALL broken - and when I try to hold the outer tub still with my hand turn the spin drum it won't turn freely - about a quarter turn either way - and sounds like there might be sand or grit between the tubs. Any suggestions?

Take the front panel of the washer off and see if the motor is turning when you put it in the spin cycle.

There may be something caught between the tubs not allowing the tub to turn.
