Default Washer won't spin
Brand: Kenmore
Model Number: 110.20072993
Age: 5 - 10 years

I can really use some help. My fix-it husband has cancer and is bedridden and money is tight. My Kenmore stopped spinning. My daughter and I took off the cabinet but decided it looked too complicated. I called repair man and he said that the "transmission" was out and it would be almost $400 to repair. I found a gearbox which supposedly is same as transmission online parts store but can a novice replace this and how do I know the diagnosis is correct? Thanks

Hi,

Does the gearbox/transmission look oily or dripping oil under it?

What does it do during the spin cycle?
Does it just sit there not making a sound or does it sound as if the motor is running, but the tub is not spinning?

If it sounds like the motor is running I would check the motor coupler.

Motor coupler guide

If the washer is just dead during spin and sitting there not making a sound I would check the lid switch. You should be able to hear the lid switch click on and off as you open and close the lid.

Let me know what you find.

I have the cabinet off but don't know where to look for the oil or the gearbox. I don't see any oil on the floor under the washer with the cabinet off. I'm going now to check what happens when it is set on drain and spin. I think it goes thru the washer cycle but just sits there when it is supposed to be spinning. I'll check the switch that is engaged when the lid is down. How do I find the gearbox?

The gearbox is at the bottom center of the washer. The motor and water pump sit in front of the gearbox.

The washer will not pump out or spin without the cabinet on as you had to disconnect the washer lid switch harness plug to remove the cabinet.

If the washer just sits there not making a sound during spin/pump out I would bet it's you lid switch giving you trouble.

If the washer acts the same with the cabinet off (lid switch disconnected) as it does when the cabinet is on with the lid switch plugged in then a new lid switch may fix the problem.

Could you hear the lid switch "click" on and off as you open and close the lid?
