This sounds like a tough one here. Sounds like your lid switch is working if the machine is going into spin when you close the lid. This kind of sounds like a timer issue. However, there are a couple of other components in there such as your water valve, and water level switch. Or, you could have something like a broken, or burned wire connection.
Not sure how in depth you want to go with the machine, but if I was working on this I would start at the water valve. This might sound funny, but I would check to make sure you are getting water to the valve, remove the hoses and make sure the water screens look clean. This probably is not an issue based on what you have described, but I would check it anyway. After this I would get a multimeter and start by checking for 110 vac at the water valve connectors. From there I would start working my way back checking for bad wires, components, and so on.
