Default Washer won't drain or spin
Brand: Roper

Our Roper washer won't drain or spin (even when water has been emptied). The hose isn't clogged... any ideas what could be wrong?

Does this mean it does fill and at least agitate ok, just stops when it should be starting the drain/spin cycle?

If yes, this is most often a simple problem, the lid switch, #9 in the link below, is broken, bad or loose (two screws hold it in when you lift the lid and look)...

Whirlpool RAX4232KQ0 Parts List

Even more common cause of this (and easier still to check and fix) is that #20 piece in that diagram. Its the plastic tab that pokes down into the hole when you close the lid and activates the lid switch. Its very common that these break off in time. If you look for it and don't see it then its been broken off.

The lid switch is there to kill power to the motor when the lid is lifted so you don't get tempted to reach into it while its in spin (safety).

I had the same problem. It ended up being the safety switch that is supposed to stop the spinning when the lid is opened was not closing, thus it still "though" the lid was up. On our washer the switch was inside the top near the left hinge. The pivot had an arm that when the lid went down, was supposed to close the contact switch. The switch came loose and thus the contact was not closing. The fix was to readjust the switch and tighten it up so it would close. In a pinch (but leaves an unsafe situation), you could force the contact to stay closed with duct tape or some other strapping until you can get it fixed properly. You just have to remember to manuall pull the knob to stop the spin before opening the lid. Again -- that is not the safest, but would let you finish the washing cycle.

Thanks for the help! It was just a broken switch. A much cheaper fix than a new washer
