Default Washer will not turn
Brand: Kenmore
Model Number: 110.46472501
Age: 1 - 4 years

A month or so ago, I had problems with the washer not turning while running, so my husband took the back off and discovered that the belt had slipped off of the pully on the back of the washer. He put it back on and tightened the pulley and it was working again. Noticing that there was a lot of ground up belt dust in the interior, we ordered a new belt.

I got my belt just a couple days ago, but the washer stopped working before we could install it. Took the back of the washer off again and the belt was slipped off again, but also now the pulley is spinning freely and won't turn the barrel. We looked around inside of the washer for anything that might have fallen off or came loose, but can't find anything. Is there something that should be keeping the pulley in place? What am I missing?

There should be a nut holding the pulley in place.

If the nut came off the tub has likely moved.

The shaft of the basket has a flat spot on it that the pulley goes over.

Oh, the nut was still on, but when you tightened the nut down, the pulley would spin freely.

We discovered the problem. The pulley is made from a softer white metal, and it was stripped out. Now exactly why it stripped out, I don't know. Maybe it has something to do with the belt being loose? (Or the belt was loose because of the pulley ...) We took the pulley down to a machinist who did a couple of things to let us make sure it was just the pulley that was the problem and not something else. Now all I have to do is order a new pulley.

Thanks!
