Default Washer Stuck in Rinse/Drain mode
Brand: Frigidaire
Model Number: FEX831CS
Age: 1 - 4 years

When I start the washing machine, it runs through all of the cycles just fine. Then it gets to the rinse cycle, and the water just pours right through it and into the drain. It will do this for hours until I manually turn the knob to spin. Then it takes off, spinning away.

I've only wasted about 10,000 gallons of water so far. . .

I have found a post that suggests that maybe this is a timer problem. If so, where is the timer located and is it easy to replace?

I have found another post that may be of help. Apparently, the washer could be suffering a siphoning effect caused by the drain hose not being high enough or properly positioned. I will look into this and post the results.

Yes it is likely a siphoning problem.

Your drain stand pipe should be at least 36" tall the same height as the washer.

Sometimes this will happen and you will have to install a siphon break kit.

Here is a part number for the kit. The part number is PS46114.

Here is a link to your washer model FEX831CS.

To resolve this siphoning problem, I simply raised the high point of the drain tube. As it turns out, I had moved the washer and caused the high point of the drain tube to lower just enough to cause a siphon during drains. I tied a wire around the high point and tied the wire to the back of the washer to hold the high point up high enough (about 3 inches higher) to eliminate the siphon.

Okay. Since repositioning the washer and raising the high point of the drain tube, I have run into the siphoning problem less frequently, but it still happens on occasion.

I think I have it completely solved now. The drain tube goes into a floor drain in my basement and it was shoved down into the drain so far that it was actually sitting in water. I pulled the tube out of the drain so that air can get into the tube and so far, this has completely solved the issue.
