Default Washer overs fills with water
Brand: Maytag
Model Number: pav5000aww
Age: 5 - 10 years

Hi
My washer sometimes in timed wash cycle or the rinse cycle will keep running water over filling the tub. It works sometimes and then it will just keep filling and overflow everywhere. I have looked at the wiring dia. and notice it has a water level switch. Do you think this could be my problem. Thanks Greg

More likely it is the water inlet valve. Sediment and grit in the water can cause the valve not to close. When this happens it is usually the cold water valve. You can flush to water line going to the washer and clean the screen filter in the hose.

There will also be screens on the inlet side of the water valves

Personally i would lean towards the water level switch.

Rarely but it does happen, a piece of crud/cloth/rug backing gets down into where the pressure tube enters the tub. It floats around quite happily but every now and then ends up at the tubes end blocking water from entering the tube. This then causes an overflow.

From the parts digram it looks like you could run the unit with the back off the control panel. Run it, when an overflow occurs manually activate the water level pressure switch, if the overflow stops it is the pressure switch OR a loose/cracked pressure tube OR something blocking the tube. If the overflow continues then it is the valves or the contacts in the level switch sticking

There is a easy way to check this. If the water overflows, and you have to shut the water off at the valves behind the washer, then you need a water valve. If it overflows, and all you have to do is hit the timer to shut off the water, then you need a water level switch. Cut and dry. If you need me, I can be reached at ApplianceEducator.com Tom
