Default Washer out of balance
Brand: Whirlpool
Model Number: LA7780XSW1
Age: 5 - 10 years

Help. We have a top loader that was leaking from a loose drain hose. I got that fixed, but now the washer shakes like a bansee during the spin cycle. I've tried balancing it, lifting the rear of the washer 'til the rear feet "click" and putting a board under the rear feet to raise them from the damaged floor and re-leveling the front feet. I saw somwthing about a water ring that will keep the tub centered. It (the tub) doesn't seem to want to stay centered when I push it to one side or the other. The tub basket does come back to center, but it does so very sluggishly, if that helps. I would appreciate a reply as soon as possible as I am just visiting and don't want to leave them with a washer so badly out of balance. I checked the spring and it looks OK.

It sounds like the counter balance spring may be unhooked.

The spring hooks to the base of the washer.

Here is the spring.

The other thing to check is the pads.

Here are the pads.

Here is a link to your washer model LA7780XSW1.

I had already checked the spring, thanks. We finally got the washer to settle down by lifting the back of the machine and letting the rear feet "click" into place again. It took many tries, but this finally seemed to work. i will be back there next weekend and am taking a piece of plywood to fit under the entire washer. Hopefully that will keep the washer level. I will check the pads also. Do I have to turn the washer on it's back to do that? I think I read about water somewhere in the top area of the tub that helps the tub maintain a consistant balanced rotation? Could this have spilled when I had the washer tipped about 45 degrees when I was trying to move it?

The best way to check the pad is to remove the cabinet.

To remove the cabinet you will have to remove the two screws in the control panel and flip it up to ward the wall.

You will then see a brassy spring clip in each corner, remove them.

Disconnect the lid switch wiring harness.

Open the lid of the washer and tilt the cabinet forward and lift it out of your way.

There is a tub ring that sits on the top of the tub that has liquid in it but it is sealed so there is no way for it to spill.
