Default Washer only spins sometimes
Brand: Kenmore
Model Number: 110.24732300
Age: 1 - 4 years

Spin Cycle only works sometimes on Kenmore series 70 Model #110.24732300.
I have done some searching on line and here is what I have tried so far:
1.) Replaced Lid Switch
2.) Took Motor off and checked coupling...everything looks ok
3.) Checked between the two tubs to see if anything was obstructing rotation and that was ok.
4.) Took timer off and visually inspected it - No burnt/hot spots and no broken prongs.
5.) Took Clutch apart and cleaned throughly with alcohol. And the spring on clutch felt good and tight.
6.) Checked the two drive "fingers" that release the brake they are ok.
7.) Checked the drive block and all notches look good.
8.) There was no lint filter underneath the inner wash basket so this isn't an issue.

When the spin works it runs very well and very smooth. When the washer does not spin during the cycle, the timer knob will still go through the spin cycle and make "clicking noises" as it would normally do if the cycle were working. Also you can hear the motor running.
Any help or other advise you could give would be greatly appreciated. I am not used to this model as I just bought it used about a week ago. Thanks in advance for your time.

You may have dragging brake shoes. Pull cabinet, pump and motor. Turn motor coupler clockwise till tub starts moving. If very hard to move tub you have bad brake shoes. Pull spin basket and tranny. Pry down spin tube and remove brake shoes. I usually just grind down the shoe pads and oil the them. Put back together and check.

Motor coupler turns tub fairly easy. We had already looked at the spin tube and brake the other day. However, I have some new information - I found the cheat sheet behind the top console and it had a list of all the machine functions for each cycle. I went through each cycle with the lid open and switch plunged down so I could see exactly what was happening and where it was missing functions at.

On every cycle where the machine function diagram sheet calls for Agitate Lo, Dry Agitate Lo, or Spin Lo, the timer switch just clicked right through all Lo settings and the machine just sat idle, but I could hear the motor running. The only Hi setting the machine is idle through is the spin (and that will kick in and work sometimes).

So, does this new info sound like a timer problem or would that be the motor since it is a 2 speed? I sure hope we can get something figured out. Laundry is really starting to back up. Thanks again!

Your motor is not turning on these cycles, just humming. Best to ohm out the speed selector switch to check. Also, if you can take cover off timer, look for burnt contacts.
All the evidence suggests no start current. Either that, or your motor will not start up on lo speed.
Sort of academic though, we are all blinded by your lack of a meter!

My washer does not have a speed selector switch...I have a 2 speed motor, and I am assuming that the timer tells the motor when to switch to Lo or Hi...just going by the machine function sheet I found in the console. .... Will try to find/use an ohm meter for future projects........wouldn't want to keep blinding people...LOL

As a servicer and a practical person I keep a known good used motor for these "difficult" projects.
Sooo.. call a local appliance dealor and see if you can strip out a used motor from their junk. Worth a try!! Or just buy one from ebay.
Then you can rapidly pin down what is wrong, motor or timer.

Unhappy

well, late yesterday afternoon, my husband got tired of my little fix it myself project (I was not and had really learned alot and felt like I was just about to get it) and just called a service tech. He came out, thinks it is the motor, puts a new one on, and the machine hit all the Lo agitates, and Lo spins.....Here's the kicker - it is still missing the Hi Spins sometimes. So he took it to his shop to diagnose and fix, but he said he is still sure that we needed the new motor.

Thank you for your advice and I will post again after I get the results.
