Question Washer not spinning with heavy loads
Brand: Maytag
Model Number: MAV5057AWW
Age: 5 - 10 years

My washer does not spin out completely when washing heavy items like towels or jeans. This is true even if the load is small or medium sized. It spins but the clothes are still soaked. There seems to be no problem with lighter weight fabrics. I see some black powder around the motor. Do you think it's the motor? Also, I did hear a sound that sounded like something whirling between the tubs several loads back. I don't hear that sound now. Any thoughts?

Check and make sure that the motor is moving freely on the pivot.

It may be that the proper tension is not on the belt.

Make sure the pivot spring is in place.

Here is a link to your washer model MAV5057AWW.

Yesterday I blew into the drainhose. It surged water through the pump. After that I ran a heavy load and it did fine. I think that what I had heard between the tubs had lodged in the pump/drainhose area. If that's true I guess I just moved it and it will probably settled back into the same area plugging it off again. The black dust must be coming from the belt. Are they difficult to change out? Should I just do it now to save problems later? Thanks for your help. I've never even seen inside a washing machine before so this is really new to me.

The belts are easy to change.
