Default Washer marking clothes
Brand: Maytag
Model Number: A606
Age: More than 10 years

My washer is leaving occasional marks on my clothes. It is black, probably grease, but very hard to remove. They are in an "eye" shape usually, like this: (), or on the edges of collars or sleeves, and only on knits, like cotton sweaters (there is a curve to the mark no matter where it is).
I started noticing this about 6 months ago, and cleaned the slots in the agitator thinking the fabric was getting caught in them. I've cleaned around the top, cleaned around the bottom of the agitator, and run a small rope through under the agitator - nothing. I can't find where it is coming from.
I've heard the A606 is a champ, and would like to keep the machine, but maybe it's time to get a new washer???
Thanks for any help someone can offer.

Default washing machine leaving black smudges on clothes

My washing machine was leaving black smudges on our clothes as well. The problem was that the hose on the hot water was breaking down, and the black rubber from inside the hose was coming into the washer via the water supply. I spent several dollars on a new hose and the problem went away.

Good luck.
