Question Washer has intermittent spin cycle problem
Brand: Whirlpool
Model Number: LA5668XTWO
Age: More than 10 years

Hello all..today my mothers washer acted up after all these reliable years.I think its the clutch assy but not sure as I am an auto tech NOT an appliance repair tech. What is going on is this..motor works fine but when I turn it to the spin cycle it seems to be slipping badly..I thought its the belt but when I turned her over she has a direct drive transmission and motor all bolted together. It also smells like its burning and if I turn it off while in spin cycle and try again it won't turn.It sounds like a clutch on a mini bike in my younger years and I am pretty good at diagnosis..so thats what I am going to replace.Question is this how do I get to it..since the shaft goes up to the agitator and taking the3 bolts off of the transdidn't do anything..I assume I must take theagitator nutoffto release the complete motor and transmission assy as a unit..is this correct?..thanksfor any help,Joe.

Hi,

This Video will show you have to get into the washer.

Once you get the cabinet off take a look on the inside of the cabinet towards the bottom.

Is the cabinet full of oil. If so the tranny/gear box is leaking oil and getting into the clutch making it slip.

Here is a photo of what the inside of a cabinet looks like from a washer with a bad trany and clutch.

I flipped it over on its side to get to the bottom and everything is super dry..I checked with my hand all around the tranny and its dry.I can hear the clutch engage and disengage and if I turn it to spin it will spin and then stop then clutch tries to engage and it catches for a few seconds then stops spinning. It also smells like something is burning in the clutch....I put my nose to it and it is definately coming from the clutch/trans area.

What do I have to do to get to the clutch..take the motor and trans out as a unit after unbolting the agitator or do I have to take the Tub out before I can get the motor/trans out?,Joe.
