Default Washer doesnt always spin
Brand: Whirlpool
Model Number: 6ALSR7244MW0
Age: 1 - 4 years

Hi, Our machine sometimes spins as normal, sometimes it doesnt spin at all. It also smells slightly of burning. During the time that it doesnt spin the timer still runs as does the motor as if its preparing to spin.

We have had a local appliance guy in to have a look and he says that the gears that a worn. To fix the problem he wanted almost as much as a new machine so I just hoping he might be wrong. I ve read lots of other Whirlpool threads and it seems that the coupling device is a commen reason for spin fail. (the lid switch is OK)

I am happy to take the machine apart to see for myself but before I do I thought I'd check

Thanks fo your time.

Jon

Default Washer doesn't spin either

Hi, I read your post and I too am having the same problem. My Kenmore washing machine is not even five years old and we have been having intermitent spin issues for the past several months. My husband has already replace the gearcase and the motor coupler and we are still having the same problem. I was curious to know whether or not you solved your problem?

Thanks,
Tayalex

Does it sound like it is spinning? Does it spin on a small load? If it does it will be your spin basket assembly. If you use alot of fabric softer, it could also be a build up of fabric softener stuck to the transmission shaft, slowing the product down. If you need me you can reach me at ApplianceEducator.com Tom

Default no -still not fixed

I am waiting on a reply from Whirlpool as it is just over 2 years old and it still maybe under guarantee for the parts that are apparantly faulty. If Whirlpool dont want to pay for the repair I will attempt his myself.

The machine still washes with agitator and spin 50% of the time so we can still use it.. I am wondering if its just the coupler that is broken?

Hi,

I have a GE that does pretty much the same - won't spin, slight smell of burning, however the timer runs and the motor as well as if it was getting ready to. Be great if someone could tell us what the issues might be.

thx

Canadian chick

Jonjass, no it would not be the coupler, and Canadian chick, I would just replace your belt. Tom ApplianceEducator.com

Thanks Tom for the quick response. I opened the machine up this am and was surprised to find it was a belt driven machine, but the belt tension seems ok (maybe about 3/4 of an inch, but no more than an inch). When I turn either pulley in the direction of agitate the belt seems to transmit the force ok (it turns smoothly and easily) and although the spin cycle direction is harder to turn, I just figured that was the weight of the tub. There were no signs of friction or slippage on the belt that I could see. Still think its the belt? Not questioning your experience,

Thanks

thanks for the reply Tom. When i spin either pulley though the force seems to transmit ok and the agitator spins, harder to turn in the spin direction but i figure that's the weight of the tub? there's no signs of friction or wear on the belt anywhere and the tension is maybe a bit more than half an inch play but no more than an inch for sure. Do you still think its the belt? I'm not questioning your experience,

thanks,

thanks for the reply Tom.

Still think its the belt? Not questioning your experience, be good to know how you see this one.

Thks,
