Default Wants to spin but can't
Brand: Maytag
Model Number: top laoding
Age: More than 10 years

Hello
My Maytag has worked flawlessly for 25 years. For the last 10 years it squealed when it came to a stop.

However now it wants to spin but can't. The motor tries and then shuts itself off and you have to wait to here the motor reset.

There seems to be a great deal of friction now for some reason.

Also leading up to this I noticed that the tub will almost bang indicating an unbalanced load, although the load is balanced.

I know it's time to buy a new one be she's been so good and I think the problem is minor.

Thanks

Robert

It sound like you have two problem.

First it sounds like the break has seized.

If the break is seized it would have to be replace.

Tilt the washer back and remove the belt from the transmission pulley.

Turn the pulley in a counter clock wise direction.

If the break does not move it will have to be replaced.

Second the snubber could be worn.

The snubber is at the bottom of the washer inside.

It is a glide that the lets the tub and suspension move freely to balance itself out.

With your model number I can provide you with the parts list for your washer.

If you see water marks above transmission, you have a bad tub seal and bearing. If not, you may just have something jamming spin basket.
Will need model # to confirm.
