I am haviong a problem with our washing machine: the tub will spin but will not agitate during the wash and rinse cycles. All that happens while it is trying to agitate is make a grinding noise. I am about to open it up and see if I can see anything out of the ordinary. If anyone has any advice for what to look for that would be great since I know very little about fixing a washing machine.

Take the agitator off, and then put a small load of water only, and then look at the shaft and see if it agitates back and forth. If so replace the agitator, if not you need a new transmission. If so, it is time for a new one. Tom ApplianceEducator.com
