Default Tub rotates during agitation cycle and spin doesn't brake when door opened.
Brand: Maytag
Model Number: MAV7600AWW
Age: 5 - 10 years

My Maytag washer has 2 problems:
1 - during the wash/rinse cycle, the tub spins along with the agitator. In effect, the clothes just rotate around the agitator and don't get worked through the tub.
2 - during the spin cycle, the tub gets good speed but when I open the lid, the motor is deenergized, but the tub keeps spinning and slowly comes to a stop.

It appears that there is a brake problem, but I'm not sure if that is the case for both scenarios. If it is, is this something I can tackle myself? I really don't want to buy another washer right now.

Thanks.

I have a GE and had the same prob. I replaced the drive belt. If yours is loose, and has never been replaced, you should replace it. Make sure the belt is TIGHT on the pulleys. Mine works like a champ --- the tub still rotated when I first installed it but I found that I did not get the belt tight enough. Hope this helps. BTW---- my belt cost $3.00 at the local appliance parts place. If you have more than one parts stores, check prices. I called 3 places and was quoted $12.00, $9.00, and $3.00.
DO NOT try to improvise by buying an automotive belt!
