Default Transmission Problem
Brand: Maytag
Model Number: a206
Age: More than 10 years

Washer spins, drains, but will not agitate. When it tries we get a smoking belt. Turning main pulley to right (from bottom looking up), moves easily and drum rotates.

Turning opposite direction, drum and agitator turns together for several revolutions, then whole thing frees up and only agitator moves for a little bit, then grinding noise and drum rotates with agitator stiffly again.

To repair or not to repair? New transmission? Machine is over 38 years old?

From what you are saying it sounds like the gears in the transmission.

Here is a link to the parts of your washer model a206 some of which are no longer available.
