Default Transmission or Bearing diagnosis
Brand: Amana
Model Number: LWA05AW
Age: 5 - 10 years

Last night we noticed a burning smell and smoke during the wash cycle. After unplugging everything and pulling the front panel, we found a badly burned belt lying on the floor of the housing. The agitator does turn, but not too easily. I don't want to replace the belt if something else caused this to burn up like a bad tranny or bad bearing. Any advice on how to check for this? How easily or freely should the central agitator spindle spin?

Thanks!

If the washer is not leaking and was working fine before the belt burnt off you should check the idler pulley to see if it is moving freely.

You would have been able to here the bearing getting bad.

You would not be able to turn the agitator very easy because of the gears in the transmission.

Here is a link to your washer model LWA05AW.
