Default Top loader won't drain
Brand: Maytag
Model Number: LAT9356AAE
Age: More than 10 years

Washer ran through the normal cycle last night but then at the end I discovered that it had not drained. There was a bit of a burn smell. I suspect that very little or no water had drained at all since it was still soapy.

We turned the knob to the various cycles and closed the lid. The washer fills up water as normal, spins, etc. So I don't think it's the lid switch or the motor.

From what I've read so far, it sounds like it could be something clogged in the drain, but possibly (more likely) either something sucked into the pump or the pump is toast.

I'm planning on taking the front panel off tonight and taking a look. I'm wondering if there is anything I should look for. I'm hoping if it is a problem with the pump, at worst I can take it out and replace it with a new one.

With the front panel off you will be able to see if there is anything in the pump.

Reach under the washer and turn the pump by hand to see if the impeller turns.

Check and see if the belt is still on.

Here is a link to your washer model LAT9356AAE.

It's ok. I fixed it last week.

I took the front panel off and got the pump out. It looked like it might be clogged, but it was hard to tell. The impeller was definitely harder to turn.

Went to the parts store the next morning and bought a new pump -- comparatively the impeller was a LOT easier to turn so I figured I was taking a step in the right direction.

Installed the new pump that evening, and voila! the washing machine drains again. (My partner was impressed!)

This forum is very helpful! Reading previous posts certainly helped.
