Default Timer motor test?
Brand: Kenmore
Model Number: 110-92389200
Age: 5 - 10 years

My washer will work on all cycles fine but won't go thru cycles on its own, you can manually move the knob though. I suspect a timer motor but not sure how to test it. A new complete timer is around $90 so I don't want to just throw that part at it, Also I wonder if you can buy the motor separate..? (it looks assessable) I read where this part is often misdiagnosed, am I on the right track or should I check elsewhere....?

Any help would be greatly appreciated

They used to sell the little timer motors, now they only sell timers.

Ok, thanks,
I checked the timer motor with an ohm meter, it showed good so I attached a direct power source, it ran for a minute or so, quit, started up again for about a minute and quit again, and so the cycle went for a while, so I think I confirmed I have a bad timer motor. Can I get a few more confirmations b4 I buy a new $75 timer for an old washer...?

Thanks for all you all do!

Timer motors going bad are rare, but repairing as many washers a month I see one every couple of months. Suprisingly enough dryer timers go bad twice as often. I think if timers and washer/dryers were cleaned and oiled once a year, I think they'ed last a long time. Your timer motor is bad, nothing can revive it.

So where to get a timer motor.

I'd start searching out laundromat supply houses. Their prices are usually the best. I've maybe only seen two or three versions of timers so make sure you put the old one in your pocket.

Jkmvenice, laundromat timers aren't anything like a home type timers. A comercial
washer is primarlaly a heavy duty washer with a coin operated timer, not your home timer, completely different principal of operation.

You are correct I misspoke, I meant to say almost all timer motors are the same, though there are a few variation. Timers are different.

As for the quality of laundromat machines, the top loaders are not heavy duty, quite the contrary they are stripped down versions of the domestic models. A GE profile is a GE profile whether it has a coin box or not. The laundromat version is slightly stripped down. This was not the case in the past.

I can say without hesitation that any thing built by GE is junk.

Any front loader built by Maytag is junk, especially that Neptune series. The bearings are smaller than the bearings on my bicycle!!!

I can go out to my shop right now, and pick up 25 kenmore timers. the motors might enterchange 2 or 3 out of 25, Each one is different , r p m's, size of out put gear ect. I agree on your G.E statement. But on front loader bearings, the bearings don't wear out, the seal wears out and the soapy water washes the grease out of the bearings, then the bearing rusts, and go bad, just like boat trailer wheel bearings, I'v re placed frigidare, kenmore, front loader bearings twice as much as neptunesI've worked on a many laundromat washers & dryers.
the timer is way different, than a home timer, And those whirlpool couplings that break all the time, loundromat ones are tougher, like the new metal insert ones?

The seals go because the bearings are weak and can't handle the load. Really, what is twelve pounds of laundry?

Maytag knew better, once upon a time, than to use fasteners that weren't stainless. I know guys in the laundry business that bought dozens and dozens of Neptunes who would have loved to file suit against Maytag. Wonder why they went bankrupt!!!!!!

All in all the only piece of equipment that I could recommend would be Dexters for commercial applications, front loading Frigidaire because they are really cheap and throw aways, and some Kenmore for top loaders.

Milnors last but what company in the world uses all the same color wire except Milnor? Even NASA color codes it's wires.

Sorry I hijacked the thread-I feel much better now.

Maytag went under because they bought Norge co.(Admiral,Majic chief,Crosley) and put matag on them, you know the rest, whirlpool bought them, and now Amana, Maytag,Admiral, all have good Whirlpool internals.
