Default Stack washer drum baging during spin
Brand: Frigidaire
Model Number: fex831cso
Age: 1 - 4 years

During spin cycle it sounds like you have an out of balance drum, however this is not the case.
We took off the front panel, removed the agitator and depressed the safety switch, the washer proceded to spin and we had an empty load, not even water.

I checked all the arms and such.

Looking under the motor area, the wrapping noise was in rythm with the transmission rocking. To me, it looked as if the motor was out of balance. We then manually shook the drum and collar from the top getting the same wrapping noise. As we did that, I saw the motor and "drive shaft" area looked loose and maybe a rubber washer was missing as that is where the noise was originating-SPACE was between the motor and shaft that drives up through the washer.

Is this a bearing problem?
Do I need to tighten that space where it wraps against motor and drum?

thanks!

Do you have a working model number?

Its been a while but I'm thinking these use to have springs on the bottom base connecting to the tub area that were common to break or come off, if this is the one I'm thinking of there were usually 3 of these springs and when one or more broke or came off this problem was the result.

The model # is FEX831CSO I took off the front cover and looked for an looked for any broken springs . There are 6 springs and all look fine. I made a movie (.mpg)of what it was doing but I could not attach that type of a file . So my so my son helped me with a my space link of the movie. I hope this helps solve the problem , it does't seem to show the wobble as much as in real life . If I need to take a better movie I would be happy to.

Thanks Again For All Your Help

Can you make another video of the lower end of the washer where the motor and transmission are.

A little more light would help.

Here is a link to the parts of your washer model fex831cs0.

Here are 2 more movies . The first one shows the shaft above the transmission and the drum moves a little bit on the shaft . The banging seems to be in rythum with the big off balance part of the transmission. I think the banging may be a bearing or possibly the drum loose on the shaft ? The washer has very little time on it and with only small loads. It does not look like it will be a lot of fun to get to any of this area.
Thanks Again

It does sound and look like the bearing will need to be replaced.

You should replace the seal at the same time.

Is there any easy way to get to the bearing? Do I need to take the drum up and out or is there a way to drop the transmission to get to the seal & bearing?

Thanks

There is no easy way you have to take the whole washer apart.
