Default Spins but won't agitate
Brand: Maytag
Model Number: PAV2200AWW Ser.10
Age: 5 - 10 years

Washer fills but won't agitate. Motor overheats and shuts off. It will drain & spin out. Does this on all cycles so I'm sure it's not the timer. I thought it was the motor & replaced but did same thing. I dismantled the brake assembly & was able to move the transmission in both directions, so I don't think that's the problem. Agitator spins freely. I'm stumped! It's like the brake does not release in the agitate direction, but I don't see what controls it if anything. I'm not sure if even if it supposed to. Any suggestions?

Remove the belt and try it in the wash cycle.

Make sure the pump turns freely in both directions.

Here is a link to your washer model PAV2200AWW.

Default getting frustrated

removed belt. Motor ran fine, timer moved fine. Transmission, agitator, & tub spun freely. It is only after the tub fills and at the initial start that it seems the brake is engaged and the motor spins but the belt does not move. The motor overheats and the thermal protection kicks it off. Getting frustrated. It has to be something stupid but I can't put my finger on it.

Is the pump turning freely in both direction.

Turn it by hand to see if it does.
