Default Spin, but No Aggitate
Brand: Kenmore
Model Number: 417.99570110
Age: More than 10 years

When trying to run the washer, I hear the motor click on and then off quickly when it tries to agitate, but the spin cycle seems to work fine. Same results on all cycle selections. I can't spin the tub by hand in the agitate direction but it spins freely by hand in the opposite direction, but I don't know if that is normal or not. When it tries to agitate it moves about 1/4 or so inches and then stops. Am I looking at a transmission or motor problem? When I take off the belt, the motor seems to run fine. When the washer spins, the tub has a lot of back and forth movement even when it only has water in it. Unit is a stacked W/D with top-load, belt-driven washer. All help is greatly appreciated.

The tub is not suppose to move when the washer agitates.

If the motor work in both direction with the belt off there is something stopping the washer from agitating.

Try turning the transmission pulley in the clockwise direction.

Check under the agitator to see if there is stopping it from moving.

Here is a link to the parts of your washer model 417.99570110.

With agitator removed, transmission pulley refuses to rotate clockwise.

It sounds like one of the gears in the transmission has broken and is jamming it.

There are five gears in the transmission ranging in prices for $25.00 to $78.00.

A new transmission is about $200.00.
