Default Series of issues leading up to flooding my kitchen
Brand: Hotpoint
Model Number: VBXR1090B4CC
Age: 1 - 4 years

We bought our Hotpoint washer used about 2 yrs ago, not sure exactly how old it is, it looked pretty new when we bought it. Anyways, Sometime last year, I noticed that the cold water was beginning to come in a little more than a trickle, so I had gotten into the habit of having to clean the screen where the hose hookups to the washer. This only happens with the cold water. After a few weeks it would trickle again hence screen cleaning. so, lately Ive been washing in warm water because I havent gotten around to cleaning out the screen, of course once the rinse cycle kicked it the trickle of cold water was there.

I've had little issues over the past few weeks, not sure if its all connected or not. One day, my washer wouldnt spin out, then it did, this happened one time.

Then about a week ago my washer wasnt stopping once it was in the OFF position, it would restart another cycle. There are 2 wash setting, cottons and wrinkle free, so I would start in wrinkle free setting then it would start over in cottons setting. Then it stopped doing it.

Today I put a load in the wash and went to go do some cleaning, when I came back into the kitchen my floor was flooded. I drained the water and was working on figuring out where the problem was. I pulled the knob out to turn it back on and the water was coming out from the bottom of the washer. Before, I drained the water, I noticed that the water level was way past what it usually is for a large load, water was above the top of agitator. So, my theory is that the water overflowed in the tub and came out onto the floor from the bottom of the washer.

I read a topic about the selenoid in the water inlet valve, not for sure if that was the problem or if the sediment buildup on the screen contributed to this problem.

Here is your parts breakdown
GE VBXR1090B4CC

When you came back to the kitchen was the water still filling?
If yes, how did you stop it?

You have two parts that are often the cause of overfilling
The water level pressure switch and the water valve/solenoid

If you unplugged the unit or set it to Off and the filling stopped then it is the level switch. If you tried this and it did not work then you had to shut off the taps, then it is the water valve.

Since it is in your kitchen and could cause extensive damage I would recommend replacing both parts if at all unsure which is causing the overfill.

Now just a bit on one other possibility

The water level switch is actually a pressure switch
There is a tube that runs down to the bottom of the tub
As the tub fills, water also fills this tube, the air pressure builds up in the tube and it is this pressure which opens the fill switch cutting power to the valve.
So any crack, poor seal or plug in this tube which would effect the pressure can cause an overflow.

Would also recommend putting a replaceable filter on your cold water line or better yet locating where all this crud is coming from and repairing it.

I dont remember if the water was still coming in when I found water everything, but I was able to shut off the water by pushing in the knob. I think it was still running because when I turned it back on to figure where the leak was, it came from under and when I opened the lid it was overflowed.

do you think the coold water issue contributed to this or is it a separate thing all together? I never could figure out why it only happened with the cold, it feels like grainy particles. Not sure where I can put a filter, we get our water from a well out here, the only access I have to the water going to washer is from the hookup faucet, I will have to call the landlord about it, I did notice that the faucet was leaking a spray when I shut off the water supply to disconnect my hoses.

IS there a diagram for getting to the water pressure sensor,? Im a do it your selfer but havent done anything with a washer except replace the cord. My husband is laughing at me saying yeah right!! But he knows I can do it with the right guidance, he certainly can't! He says he wants to save me the trouble by buying a new one, I guess he don't want me to make him look stupid. BTW the part listed on here is way cheaper than another one somewhere else, so if I need the part I will most definately get it here. I want to check the hose to the pressure switch to see if it just needs to be cleaned. Thank you Ive learned a lot already from reading this forum!

Default Update!!

My rbother came over and took off the panel to get to the water pressure switch, he checked out the tubing, on the end near the bottom of the basket there was a dark gunk in the tube, it wasnt completely blocked but he cleaned it out. Holding my breath, I started up the asher and sure enough the water shut off once it hit the appropriate level. YAY! Im still going to watch it though, you never know. One thing thats sucks though, I have trouble getting the cold water connection there really good. There is a leak from the hose just behind where it screws on, I plaid a towel behind the washer to catch the drip. After the load was done I got the towel and it was pretty wet, so I started feeling around and there seems to be a leak stil coming from the back right part of the frame. Not nearly as bad as it was when my kitchen got flooded but still a leak nonetheless.

Open it again and find the exact location of the leak

By the sound of it you have had the hose on and off a number of times, could be the hose just needs a new rubber washer

Even though the hose is dripping a little, this leak is coming in more than a drip. Is it safe to open the front panel while the washer is plugged in, I just want to make sure I dont electrocute myself trying to see where the leak is, it appears that it leaks while washer is running, but stops shortly after. So, how do I see the leak if my washer is not in use?

No it is not absolutely safe
Just be careful
Do not stand in water
Only touch the unit with one hand and do not touch anything else with the other
Unplug it, open it up, then plug it back it to see the leak.
Put a pan under it if you can to catch the water
Keep from touching the unit while it is plugged in to a minimum

This may seem a stupid warning but always double check that the unit is unplugged before working on it. It is amazing how many people get engrossed in the repair and forget to unplug it. Myself included.

I havent opened the front panel to look for a leak yet but I went ahead and took off the drain hose because it was leaking, it does everytime you move it, so I wanted to make sure it was in there good and flush. To my suprise though water poured out everywhere, stagnant water. I havent used the washer since yesterday. It gushed out for a few seconds so I dont know if its the water valve that leaked water down there or what. Im ready to toss this thing off my porch and go with a Kenmore or Whirlpool. I will reply back when Ive opened the panel to see what I can see.

I opened the fromt panel of the control center, there was water leaking from somewhere but couldn't find where, the area around the valve and hose was dry,

Here I took a pic of the left side of the panel, in the red is where there was water and the arrow is where the water was leaking down behind the spin basket.

Pic of the right side of control panel, read area water is present, but no water seems to be coming from the valve itself.
