Default Screeching noise and cycle noise
Brand: Maytag
Model Number: pav2300aww
Age: 5 - 10 years

The washer started with a screeching noise when it came to a stop after the spin cycle, and now, when the washing cycle begins (first stage after the water fills up), it makes a grinding noise. The center tube is not turning smoothly. If you turn it by hand, it is rough when turning it. The tranny pulley turns fine clockwise and engages the cam when turned counterclockwise. The pump assembly is fine, and it turns fine. Since the washer is 7 years old, I'm wondering if the problem is worth fixing. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

It sounds like the tub bearing is seizing up.

Take the front panel off and see if you see water marks around the transmission just under the tub.

This will indicate a leaking seal that would cause the bearing to go.

Here is a link to your washer model pav2300aww.
