Default Replaced belts, still burns, smoke coming from drive/pump belt pulley area.
Brand: Maytag
Model Number: A512
Age: More than 10 years

Hi!

This washer is over 22 years old!! Yes, I know, maybe think about a new one ; ).

It was making a burning smell on spin cycle, it seemed to be agitating normally with no detectable smell. (Actually after further tests it was smoking on agitation also.)

Replaced both belts, (still had a spare set).

For the record the old belts didn't look too bad, and not really burned, just a little old, (about 5 years or so).

The motor, pulley on the transmission and pump all seem to turn freely, although maybe something should turn more easily, I just don't how easily they should turn normally ; ).

The pulley on the transmission turns freely in one direction counterclockwise, I believe and will turn (1/2 turn) 180 degrees in the other direction and stop (normal braking behavior?)

On my test load with the front cover still off....

I smelled a little burning belt at first during agitation then the smell seemed to go away...

During spin cycle belts still burns, with smoke seeming to come from drive/pump belt double pulley motor area in the front left bottom of the machine.

It also doesn't spin fast at all leaving clothes very wet.

Whats next, a motor or a what?

Thanks in advance.

Your spin brake is not completely reliesing the brake, adjust the brake relese cam adjust to 1/8" to 3/16" gap in break relese cam on bottom of large pully under rubber cap

Things I figured out today.

I removed the drive belt put only the pump belt on filled with some water and set the washer on spin to see if the pump belt was causing the smoking, the washer drained as it should and didn't smoke. (pump belt OK).

I removed the pump belt put only the drive belt on filled with some water and set the washer on agitate to see if the drive belt was causing the smoking, it smoked on both agitate and spin!!! (Problems with drive line assembly somewhere).

both the motor and drive pulley on the transmission seem to turn easily.

I went ahead and adjusted the spin brake just in case to see if it made any difference (I doubt it will help since it's smoking on agitate also.)

But anyway..

In the clockwise (spin) direction I never could get the brake to release, (as far as I can tell) ; ).
I heard a click but the pulley would stop turning at 1/2 turn (180) degrees as
before.

When I started doing the adjustment it looked to be about 1/4" already, is this telling me that it was probably adjusted before?

I ran many tests on this... I changed the gap to make it smaller from as small as I could to larger than and larger and put the screw back in, counter clockwise (agitate) still seems to spin freely but clockwise (spin) still goes 180 degrees and is locked.

No adjustment seemed to help.

I'm getting faster at this spin brake adjustment though, thanks!

From one of your other posts bettyboop

Sounds like your spin brake needs adjustment, and not entirely releasing the brake. Remove the belt, remove the rubber cap that covers the brake adjustment (center of the pully) turn the pully till the brake releases. The cam gap should be 1/8th-3/16"" gap if more or less, remove small phillips screw pop off little wedge shaped stop, move it a little and try it again if you went the wrong way move it the other till you are satisfied with the gap, problem should be solved.

Does making the gap larger or smaller cause the brake to release sooner or when the brakes are worn?

Do you have to run a load to see if this fixes it, or should it turn freely clockwise (spin) direction now?

Is it now time to replace the spin brake, or brake assembly or whatever it's called?

Thanks again

I understand, but everything seems to be made of metal on this thing not plastic ; ).

I still think it has plenty of years left in it.

Most of the new ones sound like trouble, this thing is simple!

Granted I'll have to be making repairs to it, but once it's fixed I think it will last a while.

You never said, is your belt loose and simply just slipping? When it's running in spin, grab the motor and gently pull the motor forward to the front, now does it tighten the belt and stop smoking and now spin fast?

That belt didn't seem to be loose and slipping on the pulley (but you couldn't tell it was slipping just by looking, only the smoke gave the clue) but when I pulled the motor forward to the front it did seem to spin the tub faster, I heard a distinct click, I might have heard that click before but didn't notice.
The motor slowed down and I released some pressure and it the motor sped up.

I couldn't tell if it had stopped burning or not in that short of a time period.

What do you think?

Thanks
