Default Poor spin and an nd code displayed
Brand: Maytag
Model Number: MAH6500aww
Age: 1 - 4 years

My washer stopped and displayed the code "nd". I understand from the manual that it has "experienced difficulty draining". The clothes were still soaking wet as though they had not been spun very much. There do not appear to be any kinks in the drain hose and water flows down the drain pipe just fine.

What is my next step in trying to troubleshoot this?

Can you here the pump running?

If the pump is running check to see if something is blocking the drain.

If the pump is not running you may have a faulty pump,a loose wire,or a bad control board.

Here is a link to your washer model MAH6500aww.

Yes, I can hear the pump running. There does not appear to be anything blocking the drain because water runs down it easily. I have discovered that it is an intermittent problem: sometimes the water gets pumped out and the water is spun out of the clothes and sometimes it ends the cycle with water visible in the drum, the clothes very wet, and the "nd" code displayed. Where should I look for an intermittent cause?

Remove the rear baffle and check the sump for a sock or something else that is small.

The baffle is in the drum.

My washer has the same problem, but the pump sounds like a high buzzing noise and when you lay the hose flat it does drain the rest of the tub. So I thought that it would not be clogged. Can you tell me if the pump will screech like that when it has gone (or going out) or does it just stop doing anything.

If the pump is making sound that it did not make before it is likely on its way out.
