Default GE washer won't spin or agitate about 10 years old.
Brand: General Electric
Model Number: WWA8600SBLAA
Age: More than 10 years

Everything worked fine yesterday.
And when I tried washing a load of wash today it agitated just fine and would not
spin. It pumps out the water just fine. When I tried to run it through other cycles it sounds like a motor is running but it won't spin or it does'nt agitate, but does pump
out the water.
The washer has a fiber cardboard cover on the back that is held on with some screws and when taken off everything is towards the rear of the washer. I checked the belt and it seems in fine condition. What else should I check that may be the problem. I also just tryed turning the drum when I put dial on spin and got the basket spining but got a loud banging type sound. I turnrd off washer when it finished pumping out water. Unplugged it and turned the basket by hand and after each full turn I hear a loud tap or click noise under the basket and once it clicks or taps I take note that it won't turn in the opposite direction. Once it really got spinning I think this sound is what I hear a lot louder and becomes banginning like.I can get the basket to spin by turning it by hand in the spin cycle but a loud banging sound under the basket. I lifted the top housing on the washer and got the basket to spin and watched it to make sure it wasn't banging on the sides. Help! Thanks! Cliff

It sounds like the transmission may have failed.

With the washer empty turn the pulley on the transmission and see if the agitator turns and the drum turns.

Turn the pulley one way for agitate and the other way for the spin.

If nothing moves the transmission has something broken in side.

Here is a link to the parts of your washer model WWA8600SBLAA.
