Default Oil drops on floor around washer
Brand: Maytag
Model Number: ?
Age: 1 - 4 years

A couple of months ago I noticed alot of oil drops on the floor around the bottom of my Maytag washer and sometimes when it's washing clothes there is a "burnt" smell in the laundry room. Also, when it is in the agitation cycle, it makes a noise like there are some gears grinding. Could this be the transmission or gear box about to go out?

Yes it does sound like the transmission has an oil leak. Grinding is not a good sign.

Do you know what could be causing this? I talked to a Maytag salesman and he said that there may be a bad seal that is allowing water to get into the transmission and forcing the oil out. He said that the transmission and seal may need to be replaced. Any advise?

First thing to do is check in your owner's manual to see if you have any warranty on the washer.

The transmission would have to be replaced if the gears are worn.

If there is warranty it is probably only on the transmission not the labor to install it.
