Default Occasional dark stains on clothes
Brand: Maytag
Model Number: LA112
Age: More than 10 years

Every few loads, washer deposits dark stains on clothes; look like a few drops of dirty oil, but nothing found in basket, no sign of leaks on floor under machine, and machine washes as well and as noiseless as usual. I suspect a bearing at top of agitator may have leaking grease seal, dripping grease down thru inside of agitator. Reasonable? Regardless, these questions, please:

1) how does one remove the agitator: top end is under a three-piece plastic cover, only two of which seem to come off. Threaded? splined? need special tool?

2) is top of machine removed by prying up under front of cover?

3) any better guess as to what else might be causing the problem?

Many thanks--
Charles

On the lower part to the agitator there is a set screw.

Remove this and the agitator will come off.

The top of the washer is held on with bolts.

You have to remove the front panel of the washer to access these bolts.

With the age of the machine you are probably right about the oil.

Here is a breakdown of your washer model LA112.
