Question No Cold Water ....got me stumped
Brand: Amana
Model Number: ALW480DAW
Age: 5 - 10 years

Amana washer about 6 years old, no cold water on fill, it starts cold for a few seconds, then shuts off. I checked hoses and all is clear, I checked the water control valve and have 110v on proper valve when calling for hot or cold. Checked wiring connections, I replaced the water valve but the symptom is still happening. I rechecked electrical connections and then replaced the Timer.....still happening. I checked the temperature selection switch and that is good also.

I don't suspect water level switch because it works fine on hot cycles.

Whats a fellow to do....buy a new washer?

Seems the only thing you have not replaced is the temp switch.
Could be a bad wire someplace but you do get 120 to the valve when it calls for cold water.

Hope the below helps narrow it down for you

Here is a service manual

And here is a tech sheet

I would disconnect the cold water hose and run it into a pail. Something weird is going on but it does sound like the cold side is clogged. Water would leak in over time so you get a short burst of cold then it could not continue due to the partial clog.

Perhaps swap the hot and cold hoses at the taps.
Now do you get hot water when the unit calls for cold and no cold when it calls for hot?

Denman, thanks for your reply, it got me thinking about the supply lines.

This was a well learned lesson >> CHECK HOSES and FULL pressure flow!!!

When I bought this machine I installed some new fangled stainless hoses with a anti-burst check valve feature. When I initially checked for clogs here I did not open the valves fully, this time I opened them up all the way and viola the cold stopped after a few seconds. The hose is designed to stop flow in excess of 2.5 GPM. I don't know why it would operate okay for a few years then suddenly stop. Maybe my water company upped the pressure just enough!
