My washing machine was out of balance. After balancing the load, I broke the plastic lid, strike. After replacing this, I ran the washer again, and when it was initially filling with water it overflowed. Is this the timer?

No, but you could have dirt or grit in the water valves, or the water fill switch is bad and won't shut off.to test, if the water stops when you unplug the washer,it's
the fill switch. But if you have to turn off the faucets to stop the water, it's the water valves that the hot and cold hoses go on the back
