You have a bad tranny coupler. Just take washer apart and replace.

Yes, it runs one direct to agitage and the other direction to spin the washer.

You washer is a direct drive washer made by whirlpool for sears.

Yeah, sound like a bad motor coupler.

Could it be the lid switch?

Could be a bad switch. It must click when the lid is closed, just short out the switch and check.
