Default Motor turning on and off
Brand: General Electric
Model Number: zpsq3120t9ww
Age: More than 10 years

My GE Profile washer will not spin. With the belt off, the motor turns on and off repeatedly. Basically on for about 2seconds then off 2 seconds and it repeats. With the belt on, the same on/off cycle is there but the drum just shakes. Seems to be either the motor or the signal to the motor switching on and off? I will check the voltage to the motor and see if it turns on and off. Any ideas where to look? Is it a control panel problem?

It definitely sound like an electrical problem.

Can you please verify your model number as I can't locate it in our database?

That is the model number (ZSPQ3120T9WW) located at the top right hand corner of the machine, on the back panel.

Yes, I think it's electrical, but is it the motor or control panel? I've checked the voltage to the motor, steady at 120V. I haven't looked at the control circuit. Maybe it's telling the motor to turn on and off?

I'm hitting the library tonight to try to find a manual of some sort.

I don't want to drop in a new motor if it's the control circuit. And I just swapped out the pump too!

Picked up a book at the local library on washing machine repair, which has a section on the GE front access machines. It showed me how to get the control panel off and, that there is a wiring diagram inside. Cool!

Didn't realize the cycle was set on Gentle/Slow. Switched it back to Normal/High and motor works fine. On Gentle/Slow and Normal/Slow speed settings the motor does it's on/off cycle. If I read the wiring diagram, and motor label correctly it's a 2 speed motor. Does this mean the slow speed is no good?

Still trying to figure out the control circuit though. Any hints?

This is a common motor problem, cutout on slow speed. If you need slow speed=new motor time.
