Unhappy Motor Starting/Stopping/Clicking At Start of Spin Cycle
Brand: General Electric
Model Number: WBSE2090A2WW
Age: 5 - 10 years

I sat by the washer and watched to see what was happening and when it happened. I start a load on the Cottons setting for Heavy, which gives it a 15 minutes wash cycle. It moves thru the various times of 15 min, 12 min, 9 min and 6 minutes. Near or at the end of the 6 minute cycle is when the clicking starts. The 6 minute light is the only one that is lit. The motor appears to be cycling off and on at a pace of about 2 times per second. The clicking/start/stopping lasted for 20 seconds and then the motor stops. Everything sets idle for 2 minutes, then the drain pump starts, the drain light also came on and the pump drained the tank. After the drain pump had run for a while, the motor tried to start again, but it was clicking/starting/stopping for 20 seconds. The drain light was still on. Then the motor stopped again while the drain pump continued to run for 2 minutes. Then the motor turned on (no clicking/starting/stopping) and the tank started spinning and spun until the cycle was completed. The tank then filled with water and the rinse cycle started. When that was over, the motor started clicking again (starting/stopping) and it went thru the above process again to drain the tank and do the final spin.

ALSO NOTED .... when the clicking/starting/stopping is occurring, there is a slight blue spark visible on the top of the motor. This leads me to believe the motor is starting/stopping.

I tried one other thing. I tried running a load thru on the Easy Care settings. As soon as the tank filled and the agitator was to start, the clicking/starting/stopping began.

The very first time this problem occurred on the past weekend my wife smelled something burning and noticed just a little whiff of smoke coming out of the top left corner of the machine. We have not smelled anything since then or seen any more smoke.

Since the motor, clutch and transmission are all capable of agitating, and spinning the tub at some point in time during this whole process, I just don't feel it is mechanical. To me, it just seems like it is pointing to something electrical --- or something wrong in the timer. But that is a layman's guess ..... not a pro's.

I continue to lean towards it being a timer problem. I have checked all the connections on the timer and they seem tight.

Someone ......... anyone ????

Looking for someone to agree with me about the timer unit being bad ...... or pointing me in the right direction.

A neighbor said it might be the clutch, but if the clutch works for the agitator, and part of the time for the spin cycles ..... it just doesn't sound like a clutch problem.

Like in a car .... clutches either work or they don't. They don't work most of the time but fail occasionally.
