My washer will not agitate when it trys the motor hums and the a burning smell and the motor shuts down temporarily the washer will spin I have dismantaled the thrust bearing parts and the brake assembly but have know idea what to replace if any should please help I think i can do this Also when washer was assembled I could turn the agitater by hand in a clock wise direction only counter clockwise I could not move it at all when the washer is diasembled the shaft spins easily in both directions again please help.

I'm having the exact same problem with my Whirlpool, burning smell and all. I've narrowed it down to either a bad motor (reverse winding burnt out) or a bad timer (bad contacts trying to energize the forward and reverse at the same time.

One thing I did to determine it was not a transmission, brake, clutch, etc problem was to disconnect the motor mechanically and see if the shaft turned in the various cycle settings. I have motion in the spin setting, but not the agitate setting.
