Unhappy Maytag washer problem

I have a Maytag washer model #LAT9316AAE that the agitator does not stay down over the shaft and the clothes are pushing it up off the shaft and its hitting the lid. Clothes are constantly being tangled around the shaft then. I didn't even know it could be removed until it caught on a rope from some shorts and when I pulled the clothes out, it pulled the whole agitator out and now it won't stay down. The washer then just spins and spins and clothes do not get agitated. It doesn't appear to have any broken parts. Just not sure what it is. Also the tub seal is leaking again and I can't remember how to repair or replace that seal. I purchased this in 1998. Any help out there? Thanks. Kathy
